    Interesting video. But I have a question: why the small F settings? With a fully open aperture you get a really small field of focus, and risk to have some part of the mini out of focus. I always use the biggest F in my camera to be sure to have everything in focus. Of course I need to use a longer exposure time, but since the camera is on a tripod I don't have to worry about motion blur.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella 22 часа назад

      I want a very shallow depth of field, helps create the infinite black behind. You don't generally have any issue with the model itself with that lens and distance and the size of the thing.

    Great video! A few pieces of advice I'd add - first, if you're using a camera which lets you set your white balance manually, do that (e.g., using a white card / gray card). It'll help avoid having a false color cast to your photos. Second - if you're using a camera with an adjustable aperture (f-number) and/or adjustable focal length (or optical zoom), you can use those to control the depth of field of the photo (how much is in or out of focus). Large aperture (smaller number in the f-number) will result in a shallower area of focus - this can accentuate the feel of it being a three-dimensional object, but it also means more of the mini isn't clearly visible, so it's something you'll want to make a conscious choice about. And third - don't be afraid to do a little bit of photo editing, particularly if your photography setup is less than ideal. Going into Lightroom / Capture One / whatever and gently tweaking exposure, contrast, highlights, etc can really help get a photo that's more true to what the mini actually looks like, rather than to what your camera was able to capture by default.

  • @frugal10191
    @frugal10191 День назад

    A white balance card is a great addition if you are shooting with a DSLR. Shooting outside on an overcast day can be a great alternative if you don't have lights. Needs to be sufficiently overcast such that you can't make out the sun disc though, otherwise you get top down lighting again. Also, focus stacking can help ensure that all parts of the model are in sharp focus, but you do need a tripod.

How can I prevent tip dry with 0.2 as I want to do some detail work in the future and not scared of 0.2 tip. I tried retarders, thinners, flow improvers but still having the same issue. What is the ratio do you recommend? Thank you!

    Vince, when I take pictures of my minis that look really smooth and nice to my eye all of the tiny imperfections become glaring. Blends that look smooth to my eye are suddenly extremely stark and tiny tiny variations in the brush stroke look gigantic. Should I reduce the reolution or take the picture from further back so it looks more like what I see when I hold the model in my hand or are good paint jobs really that precise that even with a high res close up pic the mini should look smooth?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella День назад

      It's just what happens. Some of that can be noice from the camera. That being said, it's often just the same detail you see if you use magnifiers and just the nature of acrylic paint if you don't really smooth it out.

  • @Peithetairos
    @Peithetairos 2 дня назад

    Excellent advice and well structured video. I think focus is definitely one of the more tricky aspects of miniature photography, especially with large minis or groups of minis. If everything is supposed to be in focus I recommend focus stacking if your camera supports it. Otherwise every objective has a sweet spot F stop wise where it is the sharpest. You would assume something like F22 would provide superior results, but you will have to fight with refraction. Accordingly, F8 could be sharper than F22, but won't get the entire scene in focus. Hence focus stacking can be a solution. I use Affinity to stack the resulting shots, some cameras have the function built in. Smartphone cameras are basically pin hole cameras and due to this less problems with focusing on the entire plane a miniature is in. So, why did you go for 2.7 F stop? Sweet spot on your camera?

    Been playing with the idea of a TK on Dragon, with Armour of Ages, Potion of Toughness and Talisman of Protection. It is very expensive - almost 460 points - but a 4+ 5+ 5+ with re-roll enemy successful Wound Rolls on T6 that can be boosted up to T9 potentially with potion once seems like it would be tough as nails! (the person I play with really wants WoC to get a Chaos Dragon lord when we finally roll round to them, so I want my guy to survive combat with this!)

    Hey Vince, I'm loving your vids, this is incredibly useful. You've brought back some of my hobby mojo and I'm trying some new techniques. I've tried your zenithal followed by thin glaze method on a few minis now and I've gotta say, they tend to look kind of washed out, and if I go back over and try and increase the depth of colour, I end up 'painting over' the undershading work that the zenithal did in the first place. Then this voice in the back of my head tells me to just do what I'm used to doing (classic GW base-wash-layer-layer). Any hot tips on how to navigate this? Do you talk about how to improve vibrancy / depth when using glazes in any of your other vids? I'm using a combo of vallejo and GW paints - the colour I'm working with most is mephiston red over a standard zenithal with a super light coat of brown sprayed over the zenithal. Thank you!

      It's always going to be a little faded. You can utilize something like Speed Paints 2.0 or Contrasts thinned out, those are more saturated and so you'll see a little less of that. Inks can also be a great tool to get a little mroe punch while maintaining transparency.

    For me photography is pretty easy...I've been a photographer for 45 + years. When I do some photos of my miniatures, I set up a little photo booth on a table and do several at a time. It's so fun and they look great every time. And you don't always need a black background...it's pretty cool to change it up sometimes. You can make a white background look dark to black with the lights you use to light it up and camera adjustments. So much fun...Thanks for sharing...peace

    Thanks Vince! One of the early pieces of advice I heard for photoing minis is to make use optical zoom on the camera. This is to make sure that the near and far parts of the mini are all in focus. When the camera is at 1x, it might have a focus depth of 1” if it is close to the mini (close enough that the mini fills the picture without cropping). If the mini has a depth of 2”, the face will be in focus, but maybe not the arm behind it. With a 3x zoom (the newer IPhones), the depth of focus will be larger, meaning that the sword in front, the body of the mini, and the arm behind will all be in focus.
